My daughter love this Clarinet. Great buy for beginner. I would recommend this Yamaha YCL-255 for a student who is playing in a band.

For decades Yamaha and Buffet have dominated the student market for clarinets and for good reason. They assure new clarinetists (and more experienced intermediate ones) that their instrument will play consistently well and be in tune.

I learned on the old Yamaha YCL26 that preceded this (and the YCL 250) and I have a strong personal preference for Yamaha. That old YCL26, too, was a quality instrument and held up beautifully through the years. The 250 made some gentle changes and the YCL 255 has built on those improvements, including incorporating some of the construction found in their more expensive instruments.

The Yamaha quality is outstanding. Pads last and last and the corking is excellent with the silver-appearing, nickel plated keys/pins/springs always working perfectly, in my experience, for years. The YCL 255 improves on the bore and has added an adjustable thumb rest that can move up and down with a large screwdriver or a slim coin–a great asset for student learners. This is still a resin instrument, but I love the look of the YCL 255 since Yamaha has found a way to give it a brushed matte finish, making it look much more like the expensive wood clarinets–yet keeping the advantages of the resin ones (durability–so important for students; easy maintenance and the ability to withstand temperature changes, for example, in an outdoor band situation.) The case is newly designed, too, stackable now, and as usual there is space inside for a swab, reeds and the instrument. The only thing I miss from the old YCL26 is the silver rim around the bottom of the bell. However, this clarinet is lighter and, with the matte finish, looks fine without it.

The Yamaha mouthpiece (4C) that is included is a good one. IIt does much better than you might expect is often purchased separately and sells discounted here at Amazon for $40..As for reeds, most beginners start with 1.5, occasionally 2.0 and move up as their playing and control improves. Reeds will be cut bamboo, multiple in packets as you go through them fairly often. I like Michel Lurie, these are 3.0s but you can see the variety of strength available. Mitchell Lurie Premium Bb Clarinet Reeds, Strength 3.0, 5-pack

This is a very pretty, low maintenance clarinet (just swab after each use) –it is very motivating to hear the beautiful tone it produces even at a beginning level. Highly recommended. .

Played flawlessly out of carton, needing no adjustments of any kind. Of the number of clarinets I have purchased over the years, the Yamaha is the ONLY one that went together without the necessity for brute force or tedious sand papering. I would unhesitatingly purchase another product made by Yamaha after my experience with the YCL-225. A truly well engineered musical instrument!

UPDATE 1-11-2016 After just a month of erratic playing, while practicing scales, a piece fell off and even if the instrument was fixed, I would never trust it again. It is too much trouble sending stuff like this back to the seller. I will look for another brand, NO MORE YAMAHA’S!!!!
