I purchased these more out of curiosity than actual need because I have been using a pair of Promark MT3 Multi-Purpose Felt Mallet as my primary mallets for the past year. I’ll get the issue out of the way first: the reason I subtracted a star is because the handles on these mallets are slippery. That is due to the finish. If you have sweaty hands they will slip out easily. Contrast that to the MT3 mallets, which have a natural finish that are easier to maintain a grip.

However, these compare – for me – pretty favorably in all other respects. I thought that I would have issues with the yarn wound heads, but they are pretty sturdy. They are also less staccato than the MT3, against which I am going to compare these. Another physical difference between this and the MT3 is this is much heavier, weighing in at 70 grams per mallet compared to the MT3’s 53 grams. The added weight makes these easier to control when doing slow swells, as well as slower tempo patterns on toms. In fact, while this is called a cymbal mallet it’s perfect for tom work and even attenuated ostinatos on cowbells and the such.

Other physical characteristics include the head, which is 1.875 inches in diameter tapering to 0.75 top and bottom with a height of about 1.75 inches. From the bottom of the head to the end of the handle is 13.5 inches, with an overall length of 15.25 inches, and the handle is 0.4375 inches in diameter (thinner than a typical 7A stick).

These would be perfect for me if the handles were uncoated or otherwise less slippery when my hands sweat. I am going to try some workarounds (tape, wax, etc.) because I do like the feel of these and especially the way they sound on both toms and cymbals.

I was looking for some mallets to provide a more gong like sound on a some new cymbals. These more than fill the bill. As you would expect from Zildjian – these really provide the sound I wanted along with a tremendous feel. It’s been a long time since I had mallets – these make me wonder why I waited!
