The caveat first: this clever replacement for wingnuts only works on 8MM threads. If you are using a stand with 6MM threads it will not work (a less functional substitute for those using 6MM stands is the Cymbal Crown Quick Release Cymbal Holder 6 mm.)

Using this quick set device is easy: push in the side buttons and push down over the threaded stem after you set your cymbal and top felt in place. That’s it. For teardown, reverse the process.

Since I never use more than two ride cymbals – and typically one – and no crashes or splashes, this four pack gives me two complete sets. Some drummers will probably want two or three packs of these depending on how many cymbals are typically set up plus some spares.

There is a competing model that you may want to consider when making a purchase decision – the Vater Percussion Slick Nut – but be aware of some issues with that device. Specifically, you need to tighten a set screw to secure it to the stand, which defeats the purpose in my opinion. On the other hand, it does come with a thin top felt that does not attenuate or choke cymbals the way the large felts that are stock on most stands tend to do.

Be an informed buyer because you do have choices. I prefer this Tama model because there are no trade-offs and my stands are 8MM.

It seems silly that something so small and seemingly trivial could make such a big difference, but it really does. Every time I take one off and put it back on, I just think back to the days of manually screwing/unscrewing wing nuts. The ease of use makes me happy every time I use this.
I know saying it will change your life seems like a big claim, but really, it will.

I’ve been using one of these for over a year as somehow it was left on my backlined cymbal stand. At first I was annoyed that someone lost my wingnut, but quickly realized I actually got the better end of the deal. Playing a lot of clubs and bars I don’t have much time to get setup and break down. Having to stand there and spin a regular wingnut around a bunch of times to get it off and then again once the cymbal is on takes time, especially when you do it for 4 cymbal stands. And everyone’s had this happen to them: you’re rushing to get setup as your band is about to go on, the stage is dark and crowded with band mates and sound guys making last minute adjustments, you’re trying to get your cymbals on the stands as quick as you can and as you spin the wingnut to the top and it falls under the kit amidst a tangle of stand legs and mic cables, near impossible to find without a flashlight. This has happened to me many times, and I hate scrounging around on my knees trying to find a chrome wingnut under a bunch of chrome stands and legs while the rest of the band stands there ready to play. Well with a full set of cymbal mates on my kit I don’t have to worry anymore. These things are great. You just squeeze the buttons and pull it and the felt off, drop the cymbal on, squeeze the buttons again and put it back on over the top felt like a normal wingnut. I can get all 4 cymbals on in the time it used to take me to do one. They give you just as many tension options as the stock wingnut in a fraction of the time. The springs that hold them on the stand are very strong, there is no risk of the cymbal flying off the stand or even losing a cymbal mate while transporting your gear in a bag or flight case. These things are a big time saver and a must have for any busy gigging drummer.
