Great use of popular jazz structures, not improv, April 20, 2008

The Jazz Course has a great selection of popular jazz and rock styled exercises that would be fit for the, say, second year of study for a teenager or adult applying themselves earnestly to learning piano.

The exercises are musical and musically fun, and they won’t insult the adult learner’s intelligence. They are, however, mostly just simple songs. While the occassional mention is made of conceptual jazz, as would be used for improvising, the book is a traditional melodic exercise book at heart, not a conceptual approach.

That said, there are jam-session hints at the bottom of many pages that can be used to play along with other intruments. Along those lines, though, few songs have chord symbols (and no miniture guitar fret symbols) actually set above the staves. Having I, IV, etc., on practically every song would be ideal for teaching jazz/rock.

If you are using the Alfred’s Adult Piano Course books, you know that occasionally you get to the point where the book recommends that you get one of these auxillary books to play out of for a while.

Doing so provides variety both for your boredom level, and “finger memory” as you learn how to sight read a wider variety of music. They aren’t expensive, and will give you a greater depth of experience as you tackle the next section of the course book.

The good folks at Alfred’s provide a variety of music styles in these add-on books, so that if you don’t like one style of music as additional practice, there are good odds that you will like the next one. If your only interest is rap, there is no further need for you to practice the piano. LOL

The Jazz/Rock course is a MUCH more substantial collection of music than any of the other musical genre add-ons. Most of the others contain maybe 15 or 20 songs. This book would fit right in with any collection of bound sheet music you might purchase. When I got it I was shocked, pleasantly, at the amount of content. GREAT value at this price.

Simple melodies and mediocre CD, June 24, 2011

I was very disappointed in the book and the CD. The melodies are very shallow; lightweight. The CD is even worse. Either the author or Columbia wanted to save money, so, the parts are all played on synthesizer, and it sounds like circus music.
